Text

Dear Mark,

By the time you read this, Agatha and I will be gone. Even if our bodies are still here, we will be... elsewhere. Where? Perhaps we'll attain life after death. Fitting, given the death that invaded our lives. Apologies for departing so hastily, without a word before this. Had I mentioned this earlier, you would have tried to stop us. Tried, at least...
Reading this will no doubt make you angry. I bet you think that we're selfish. Maybe even cowardly. You may be right. But surely you understand--as you must, since you are--were--our best friend.
We couldn't bear to live any longer like this. This constant fear, day in and day out... it wore us down... wore us out. We got tired. Which is ironic since neither Agatha nor I got a good night's sleep in 10 years. Dread during the day, dread at night.
I never told you this but I fear the infected less than I came to be afraid of... other people. After the Fall, everyone's worst instincts floated to the top of their personalities, like a turd on a pond.
Rather than banding together, helping one another and fighting to keep humanity alive... they simply fought each other. Agatha and I despaired at the constant displays of pettiness, cruelty and selfishness.
We felt better suited to take on monsters than to face the ugliness of human nature any longer.
We hope you'll understand our decision and accept it. We thank you for all the moments we shared together. You were our best friend in the whole world.
