WIP

The contents of this blog page are speculative and part of an ongoing discussion on the topic. They should not be taken as fact. Indeed, it is likely the case that the developers do not want to provide a specific location for Villedor, but rather wished to create a setting that drew inspiration from a wide variety of European regions and cities. It could also be that each region of Villedor is supposed to stylistically lean towards or pay homage to a different area of Europe.

Overview

Types of evidence available

Intro-based evidence

Name-based evidence

Artefact-based evidence

Vehicle registration plates with the EU flag show that the country Villedor is located in was in the European Union. However, no country code is present, with a coat of arms in its place.

Geographic & climatic evidence

Survivor mentions it's too hot to water plants at noon, as the water will simply evaporate. Season appears to be early autumn. Tape mentions settlement is on the Turzawa River and that Villedor was originally called Grasburg/Grasberg/Gresburg/Gresberg.

Key points to be elaborated upon:

  • Techland is based in Poland (Wrocław)
  • Krakow is a historical city with similar architecture to the game
  • The European setting could have served as an opportunity for the devs to create a setting inspired by their home country

Similarities with Krakow

Key points to be elaborated upon:

  • Krakow metro system has a graphical style that is similar in colour and presentation to the metro system in game
  • Krakow coat of arms is similar to that of Villedor, but so are many European city COAs.

Similarities with Wrocław

Similarities with Warsaw

An ornate building in Ostrów Wielkopolski with a symbol of a beehive and bees at the top. Honey is a very important in-game resource and natural beehives can be found throughout the city, as well as human-built apiaries.

Similarities with Ostrow Wielkopolski (Techland HQ)

Street lamp in Techland's hometown of Ostrów Wielkopolski, with a traditional 'dangling' design almost identical to that found in-game.

Ostrow Wielkopolski is a Polish town and is the location of Techland's head office. There may be direct allusions to this town in the game, but none have been discussed as of yet.

Evidence

StreetSign Comparison.png

The town features classic central-European architecture like that shown in the game, but more specifically, thr style of street lamp that can be found in the town is of particular note. While other street lamp comparisons with areas such as former Austro-Hungarian territory show ornate but attached lamps, the lamps in Ostrow Wielkopolski appear to be detached and 'dangling' exactly like those shown in game, with an extremely similar, if not identical, shape profile for the lamp itself. This appears to be a direct transposition of elements found in the immediate vicinity of Techland's headquarters into the game.

  • Elyseum could be a reference to the Champs-Élysées avenue in Paris, as the symmetrical road layout and triumphal arch are very much reminiscent of this area.
