"Just light and throw! No muss, no fuss! (NOT to be confused with the drink of the same name served in bars.)"
In-game description

Molotov, sometimes called Molotov cocktails, are a type of throwing weapon unlocked in Dying Light. Its blueprint is learned upon unlocking the Survival Starter Kit skill.

Overview

The molotov is a particularly useful low-risk crowd-control/chipping weapon. Due to its lack of explosion, it does not attract virals or volatiles when thrown. Keep in mind that if it sets an oil spill alight, any red barrels near the spill will explode and cause noise so caution is advisable when using this weapon near said spills.

Due to its decently large area of effect, as long as players have a van or truck to take refuge on, this weapon can be useful against hordes of biters. Another use is against human enemies. As molotovs explode whether or not they hit the target, they are superior to various anti-human projectiles such as toxic bolts while its instantaneous explosion and lack of noise makes it superior to some anti-human explosives such as toxic grenades. Keep in mind that unlike biters, humans will flail in panic when burning, making this weapon exceptionally useful against them and its cheap cost only adds to its usefulness.

Its last use is to slowly whittle down a large enemy's health. However in this case, incendiary arrows and burning throwing stars can do the job better, being single-target tools that won't risk burning any biters around the target.

Despite all this, molotovs are not without weakness. The initial blast deals no damage and fire will eventually die down meaning that if the player wished to take down an entire horde with molotovs, they will need to take cover for some time and ready more than one molotov. To make matters worse burning biters may turn them into elemental infected, staying on fire permanently while being completely immune to its effects, along with this, any toxic biters that are eliminated with fire-based weaponry will cause their head or a small chunk of them to explode, slightly poisoning the player and attracting Virals/Volatiles.
