My son Jorah first started beating me when he was sixteen. I was thirty-five, but I've never been the strongest woman, and I'm not very big, so when he stopped listening to me there was nothing I could do to stop him. And he was careful not to hit me where anyone could see us. No marks. He just made me give him money, and whatever else he wanted. The car. The house on weekends, so he and his friends could drink and have sex. If I said anything about it, if I tried to talk to him, the beatings would start again.

I know I could have said something. I could have gone to the police. I could have asked the rest of my family for help. But since Jorah's father died... it's just been me raising him. I had to be both parents. And if I told anyone what he was doing... it would be as though I had failed twice over. Still, it cannot be put into words, how much it hurts when your own child beats you and tells you how worthless and stupid you are and how much he hates you.

Ten days ago Jorah didn't come home. For two days he didn't come home, and I worried so, I thought he had been killed. And then he DID come home, and I found myself wishing he HAD died. Because he had been bitten, and he turned, and he came to punish me again.

I loved my son. I did. Through everything, the grief and the pain and the heartbreak, and all the abuse, I never stopped loving him. I told him that, as I pointed the shotgun at his head, and I told him as I pulled the trigger, and I told him as he lay twitching at my feet.

I wish I could believe that he loved me back.
