The GRE Access Key is a Nightrunner tool and is the first the player unlocks, given to the player by Dylan during Pilgrim's Path. It can be used to open special yellow locks that are found around Villedor and can detect nearby inhibitors.
Story Relevance
Dylan gives this to Aiden before he is killed, Waltz is dedicated to finding it and kills Dylan thinking he swallowed it. Later, Aiden and a group of Peacekeepers capture Waltz, who kills the Peacekeepers and takes the key from Aiden, hours later Aiden finds Waltz in the Car Factory and takes the key back before escaping with Lawan. At the Observatory,
Aiden gives Veronika the key to find information on himself and Mia, but they learn that a missile strike was recently resumed and is going to hit the Central Loop. Aiden and Veronika are separated and Veronika is found by Waltz who tries to take the key but she is saved by Aiden, Waltz and Aiden fight but Aiden is defeated and transforms into his volatile form and tears Veronika apart and wakes up to Waltz taking the key from Veronika´s mutilated body, missiles are fired on Villedor and a large part of the Garrison district is destroyed.
After a fight with Waltz in X13, Mia tries giving Aiden the key but Waltz knocks it out of her hands and it is destroyed in chemicals, leaving one last option to save the city.
Trivia
- At one point there was going to be upgrades, likely to increase the range of the inhibitor detection.
- There was a different voice for key in the preview event gameplay posted in November 2021.
- The inhibitor detection hud element used to appear next to the item slots on the hud, before being changed to the bottom middle.
- The key can be muted if you hover over it in the inventory.
