Melee Throw is a Power skill in Dying Light.

Overview

The usage of this skill is pretty straightforward, it allows the player to toss a melee weapon of their choice at Infected, dealing large amounts of damage. It does force them to retrieve the weapon though if it is of poor quality then it can be a risk-free investment. This skill is particularly useful against Biters carrying weapons as they can drop it on a dime, allowing the player to toss it at another unfortunate enemy.

However like many projectiles, this attack can be dodged and having to retrieve a thrown valuable weapon can be detrimental in a fight, especially if it is a sharp weapon. Overall this skill is best used when the player has amassed an unhealthy amount of weapons that they still wish to use.

Below are the effects of each type of melee weapon when thrown.

Sharp Weaponry:

Deals significantly more damage and stuns most zombies. Impales zombies leaving the weapon stuck within an infected or human. Weapon can be retrieved by simply getting close enough to the body (whether dead or still alive) and picking it up.

Blunt Weaponry:

Deals significantly more damage and stuns most zombies. Weapon bounces off the infected or humans (but still does damage) and is not retrievable for a few seconds after it hits the ground. After that small delay, you can pick it back up.

Trivia

  • Before being patched, this skill was used to exploit a duplication glitch which made multiples of the same weapon.
  • While using EXPcalibur, throwing EXPcalibur while there is 0 or 1 Durability left will impale the infected/human, but will be unable to retrieve it and will no longer exist as an item when scanned with survivor sense. This is only true for the golden variant that is obtained only from the burning corpse. The silver variant can be thrown and picked up with no durability. However, it does not impale infected/humans and bounces off them like a blunt weapon.
  • When using an outfit that has a watch, you can use this skill to quickly check the time without having to open the map. By holding the melee throw, Crane will raise his left arm, thereby revealing the watch for easy viewing. Since the watch syncs up with the game time, it can be easily used to check the time without pausing the game.
  • The Van Crane outfit has the Boomberang skill, which retracts one-handed weapons with a rope automatically after throwing them.
