Shield Crafting
"Shield Crafting" is a Survival skill available in Dying Light.
Shield Crafting allows the player to craft different types of shields, each with its own special ability and use.
Overview
As expected, new abilities means that new utilities are now present for shields. Unfortunately, these abilities can only occur when the respective shields are raised at just the right time. This means that the player should only unlock this skill once they are confident with their ability to time their Shield.
These upgrades also does not remove the basic weaknesses of shields such as its ineffectivity against ranged enemies, and its limited durability.
Each shield has its own strengths and weaknesses that will be summarized below:
Tesla Shield

Tesla Shields offer amazing defensive capabilities and create precious and flexible time for the player to recover against hordes and groups. Unfortunately, the player is also unable to interact with said enemies in close range without taking damage due to their electrocution.
Claymore Shield
- Main article: Claymore Shield
Claymore Shields offer decent defensive capabilities, giving the player a small amount of time to recover. When combined with the Stomp skill, it possesses decent offensive capabilities, allowing the player to thin down the herd by finishing off fallen infected. Unfortunately, this weapon is not very useful against humans and Virals, both of which are able to get up quickly and render this shield's advantage moot.
Freezing Shield

Freezing Shields offer amazing offensive capabilities, outright freezing dangerous enemies when timed right and allowing the player to ruthlessly harm them without any consequences. Unfortunately, it is extremely inefficient against hordes as they will drain this shield's durability and cover for their frozen ally.

Trivia
- All of these unlocked shields require a shield to craft, essentially making them weapon modifications
- They are the only sources of strong Electricity, Impact, and Freezing
