Alexei is married to Maja and together they have a son, Kristov. Following the outbreak, Maja was bitten and committed suicide to avoid turning into an infected. However, she instructed him in her suicide note to do whatever it takes to protect their son.
Events of Dying Light
He is a survivor residing within the secure radio station facility in the Slums, along with his son Kristov. He and his son produce weapons for the criminal warlord Kadir "Rais" Suleiman and his gang.
During the main story quest Pact With Rais, Kyle Crane travels to the antenna under orders from Karim in the hopes of re-establishing radio communications in the district.
Later, Alexei's son Kristov runs away from the safe zone to join Harris Brecken and his runners at the Tower. Alexei begs Crane to find his son and bring him back, and Kyle agrees to search for him. After locating Kristov, trapped by infected at the Bites Motel. Kyle rescues Kristov, who refuses to rejoin his father so long as her continues to work for Rais. However, he agrees to quit working as a runner and simply make weapons for Brecken if his father will join him at the Tower.
Kyle returns to the antenna with this news, upsetting Alexei. However, members of Rais' Gang smash through the gate with a van and try to kill both Crane and Alexei. After the thugs are killed, Alexei realizes that it was only a matter of time before Rais ordered his death and agrees to join Brecken.
Alexei and his son can later be found in the lobby of the Tower, making weapons in the workshop alongside Alfie.

— Kristov:"I won't do this anymore!" Alexei:"Will you keep your voice down?" Kristov:"I don't care who hears me!" Alexei:"Kristov, what's wrong with you? We are trying to stay alive here." Kristov:"Dad, these guys are killers!" Alexei:"Yes, they're murderers. So we work for them, that's how we stay safe. You think too much with your mouth, Kristov. Start using your head or you're going to get us both killed."
Alexei:"I need your help finding my son, Kristov." Crane:"You work for Rais, don't you?" Alexei:"Sure, for protection. But I can't go to him for a thing like this. My son is... He's young. He thinks with his mouth instead of his head. He doesn't understand that sometimes you've got to go along with people who aren't so good. Now he's run off to join Brecken's bunch at the Tower. He thinks he's going to be a runner." Crane:"It's not the safest line of work." Alexei:"He's going to get himself killed. He's not ready. He's too young to be out there." Crane:"Shouldn't you be looking for him yourself?" Alexei:"You don't understand. I make weapons for Rais. If the new ones aren't ready when his people come, me and Kristov are both dead. Please! Do this for me, I'll give you something good. Something special. Okay?" Crane:"Maybe I'll ask around at the Tower. If I find something, I'll let you know. But if you ask me, your "protection" seems to have you pretty scared. You should really think about it."

After aiding Kristov at the Hostel:
— Alexei:"Did you find him?" Crane:"Yes, I did. Your son is in one of our secured zones." Alexei:"But... I thought you were going to bring him back." Crane:"He's not coming back, Alexei. He's a scout, working for Brecken. And unless he gets a lot better at it in a hurry, he's not going to last too long." Alexei:"But... couldn't you talk some sense into him?" Crane:"No, so I'm going to have to talk some sense into you. You want to save your son? Stop making weapons for Rais, and go to the Tower. Your son said he'll give up being a runner if you join him." Alexei:"No! No! Sooner or later Rais is going to tear that place down! It's not safe there!" Crane:"It's not safe anywhere, Alexei - and the question is, who's side are you on? See, right now you're on the wrong side, and your son doesn't want to have any part of it." Alexei:"You're right. He is ashamed of me. I am ashamed of me! But I'm just trying to do what's best for him." Crane:"Well then today is your lucky day Alexei, because what's best for him is also the right thing to do." Alexei:"Okay. You win." Crane:"What the..." Rais' Bandit:"(Crashes through the fence with a van) Sorry, Alexei. Rais is terminating your contract! We got all the machetes we need, so we don't need you!" Rais' Bandit:"Thank's for all the great blades, Alexei. They're perfect for hacking you up!"

— Alexei:"You were right. It was always just a matter of time before they would come for me." Crane:"They may come to the Tower eventually." Alexei:"They will. But it is where I should be. With my son. In my case, there's a weapon I designed. Something special. I never crafted one, because I didn't want to give it to Rais. I want you to take it. Good luck, Crane. Perhaps I will see you again."
