Atilla is a character featured in Dying Light: The Following.

Biography

Prior to Outbreak

Very little is known about Atilla's past, other than the fact he is an ethnographer (likely specializing in cultural religious practices and events given his later tasks.) Atilla, as it would seem, came to the Harran countryside to use his skillset with local artifacts related to the Children of the Sun. He came into contact with "The Colonel" and his wife, Jasmine. It is implied that, at some point, the three kindled and shared a friendship. Atilla is also suffering from,  according to the faceless, a form of cancer that "is eating at his brain."

After Outbreak

Atilla agreed, at the request of the Colonel, to remain behind when the outbreak started to spread to the countryside, likely so he could return to the military and organize an attempt at containment or triage for those affected by the virus. Atilla stayed with Jasmine until, at some point later, the Colonel returned to evacuate her. According to Atilla's letter (and last words to Crane), at some point during this rescue attempt, the Colonel was bitten and turned. The Colonel also gave Atilla something to give to Jasmine (The Mother), but only assuming that she had managed to not allow the events of the outbreak to cloud her judgement or drive her to complete insanity. This was likely the 8-digit pin code which would activate the nuclear weapon in the dam. Unfortunately, Jasmine left Atilla's company sometime after the Colonel's death, and Atilla never saw her again.

Events of Dying Light

Crane is requested, by the Faceless, to find Atilla and assist him with his research on their prophecy. Crane finds him drinking heavily and without any power. After restoring the power, Atilla sends him out to research (his cancer restricts him from going into the field himself, coupled with the horde of undead outside the home). Crane locates a number a monoliths detailing portions of the prophecy, and finds a red mask which he later brings to Atilla. Crane leaves Atilla and returns a short time later. He finds his office empty and with a note on it, detailing his coming to Harran, the outbreak, the requests made of him by the Colonel, and the depression he suffers from having been left alone by the Mother. Atilla gives Crane the 8-digit code likely left to him by the Colonel in the letter. Crane searches the house, only to find that Atilla has slit his own throat while wearing the red mask to try and manifest the God of the Sun in himself, in accordance with his interpretation of the prophecy. Crane takes the mask and leaves.

Conversations

Show: Vanitas

Atilla: "Have you come to kill me? Fine. Go ahead."
Crane: "My name is Kyle Crane. The Mother's worried about you, Atilla. She sent me to check on you. Make sure you're okay."
Atilla: "I am most certainly not "okay." You can tell her that there will be no book. I've hit a wall. I'm just a dying old man, not Indiana Jones..."
Crane: "Dying? Did... Did you ask the Mother for help?"
Atilla: "She doesn't have the cure for cancer, I'm afraid. My days of field work are over. The problem is, and I'll quote Hamlet here, "Everything is fucked up." Come, sit. Have a drink with me, Mr. Crane."
Crane: "Listen, if it's the field work that's stopping you... I can go out and get whatever you need. I don't know what you're researching, but the Mother really wants it finished."
Atilla: "Hmmm. You'll bring me anything I need, you say?"
Crane: "Sure. Just make a list."
Atilla: "It would certainly help if my electricity were restored. If I'm going to do this, I'll be looking at some very long nights."
Crane: "Well, I can take care of the power. But you're on your own for coffee."

After getting the power back on:

Crane: "You've got your electricity back, Atilla. Now what?"
Atilla: "Now we can get to work, Mr. Crane. I'm researching traces of the prophecy about the God of the Sun in the relics of local culture. It seems like a matter of life and death to the Mother. And I'm in no position to ask why. So... now we have three ancient monoliths to investigate. We're looking for specific features, so you'll need to see them in person and describe each one to me. Now that I have the power back on, we can stay in touch while you're out there. But please, hurry, Mr. Crane. I won't live forever."

Show: An Unfinished Story

Crane: "Atilla? Got a monolith..."
Atilla: "And?"
Crane: "It's underwater. But I could see the remains of a painting... There was... Like a head, I think?"
Atilla: "Could it have been a mask?"
Crane: "Yeah, maybe."
Atilla: "Good work, Mr. Crane."

After investigating the northern monolith:

Crane: "I see a monolith, Atilla..."
Atilla: "Describe it, please."
Crane: "There's a painting, looks old. It's got ants moving toward a circle, and one inside the circle has a red head."
Atilla: "No, no, Mr. Crane. Those are not ants. They are meant to represent believers praying to the Sun."
Crane: "Whatever, if you say so..."
Atilla: "The one on the inside is wearing a special ritual mask, if I guess correctly. All right, that is helpful. Please move on."

At the eastern monolith:

Crane: "Atilla? I found one of those monoliths..."
Atilla: "What do you see?"
Crane: "A big-ass stone, that's what. And also an old painting. It's a sun on top of a mountain - a mountain crossed with a zig-zag."
Atilla: "Anything else?"
Crane: "Yeah, someone added "Amir hearts Jasmine" on the side. Does that help?"
Atilla: "All right, Mr. Crane, let's move on."

After investigating all three monoliths:

Crane: "All right, Atilla, that's all of them. Now what?"
Atilla: "You'll have to start climbing, I'm afraid. Head to the highest mountain you can find - to a place known as the "Temple of the Sun.""

After arriving at the mountain:

Crane: "Atilla? I'm at the mountain."
Atilla: "What do you see?"
Crane: "Just a whole lot of climbing."
Atilla: "I did warn you..."

While climbing the mountain:

Atilla: "How goes the climb, Mr. Crane?"
Crane: "Not now, Atilla. One wrong move and I'm a dead man."
Atilla: "But do you see anything...?"
Crane: "Later, man. Seriously."

While investigating the monolith on the mountain:

Crane: "All right, there's a painting... it's a person with a sun for a head. And there's a woman standing nearby."
Atilla: "Very good, Mr. Crane, but that's not what we're looking for. Please keep going."

After climbing the mountain:

Crane: "Okay, I'm at the top. There's an awesome view..."
Atilla: "Let's get to work, then, Mr. Crane!"

While investigating the monolith:

Crane: "There's a painting of a bloody blade on one of the monoliths."
Atilla: "Anything else? A mask, perhaps?"
Crane: "No. Should I be looking for a mask?"
Atilla: "With the utmost diligence, Mr. Crane. This is very important."

While investigating the red mask:

Crane: "Atilla? I found this hole with... I don't know... I guess they're offerings inside it? There's a mask in here, too."
Atilla: "Is it red? If it's red, take it with you! Be careful with it!"
Crane: "Yeah, it's red... Should I take anything else? There's a lot of stuff in here."
Atilla: "No... No, that should be enough. I think you can come back now, Mr. Crane."

Upon returning:

Crane: "Here's your mask, Atilla. I don't know if it's going to help with anything..."
Atilla: "Listen, the Mother's obsessed with this prophecy. "When the world is ravaged by plague... ...when darkness devours the Earth... when men are as beasts to one another... when humanity shall be struck by corruption of both flesh and soul... ...then shall be revealed one man who, through an act of ultimate sacrifice, shall accept the Mercy of the Light. And the God of the Sun shall be revealed through him, and through him will He speak, and his voice shall be the Light and the Healing. And He shall pass through the Gates of Death so that He may bring new life." On every remaining painting, the God of the Sun, or a priest attempting to summon him, wears a mask like that one. So, yes, Mr. Crane, I believe you've helped me plenty."
Crane: "You need anything else?"
Atilla: "Only time. And peace. I have to write everything down. I'll let the Acolytes know that you've helped me. Thank you, Mr. Crane. I'll call you the moment I'm done."
Crane: "See you tomorrow, then."
Atilla: "You promise? All right. I'll be waiting for you."
